Schools of Rome in competition for the used oil recovery
Approximately 6,000 children of 21 primary schools in Rome attended the edition 2009/2010 of oliimpiadi, a project promoted by the cultural Association bio@gea in collaboration with AMA and the Environment Department of the Municipality of Rome. The exhausted vegetable oil is a renewable source from which you can derive biodiesel, an environmentally friendly fuel that, when burned, produces a low amount of air pollutant emissions. With Olii@mpiadi we wanted to raise awareness among primary school pupils to the problem of exhausted vegetable oil collected from domestic utilities and, more generally, the protection of the environment and the need to develop recycling. Pupils were presented the "Ecohouse" canisters to fill them, in their homes, with the used vegetable oil. The tanks were then emptied independently in the container called "Olivia", previously placed in the courtyard of the schools that have joined. Thanks to the commitment of children the results achieved were better than expected, with a total of 8,750 kg of exhausted vegetable oil crop .
